the freakin' weekend

Friiiiiiiiiday.
Praise the Lord and halle-freakin-lujah that Friday has decided to show its lovely face...I never thought this week was ever going to end.

I had every intention of doing some confessin' with Leslie...or maybe even some fillin' in the blanks with Lauren, but I can barely form a coherent thought much less an appealing blog post. So all you get are a few random thoughts...lucky you :)

Have I mentioned how much I hate working multiple nights in a row? I feel like I'm not a real person when I work 3+...I can't imagine being a 7 on, 7 off nurse--I don't function well being on a total night schedule. Especially when I barely see the light of day and the only people I lay eyes on are the ladies I work with. It does some damage, let me tell you this. I'm trying my darnedest to keep up with all of your lovely blogs and your lives...I have withdrawals if I go too long without them!

So will you kindly bear with me this morning while I'm sleep deprived and longing for a little outside interaction? I'm writing this post at 4 am (during my lunch break) because I've hardly posted this week and I'm missing the blog world!

My main reason for posting anything at all this lovely Friday morning is to wish my sweet, wonderful, precious boyfriend a happy, happy birthday! He turns the big 2-4 today, and although I haven't seen him yet to hug and kiss on the birthday boy, we'll celebrate big time today when he gets off work!

I love this man some kinda big. So thankful for him. I'll spare the cheesiness for the moment being... (mainly because our 1 year anniversary is soon and you'll get enough cheese that day to last another year.)

We have lots of friends coming into town to celebrate with us...not only is this guy turning another year older, it's also Double Decker weekend here in Oxford, one of our favorite times of the year! It's a huge arts and music festival held on the Square, and life as we know it in Oxford pretty much shuts down and centers around enjoying the day and having a good time. My kind of weekend! Every bed/couch/surface will be occupied, and I'll be playing hostess (a job I secretly, absolutely love!) I'm super excited to see some friends that we haven't gotten to see in quite a while, while enjoying some Rebel baseball from afar and a crawfish boil! This weekend has the makings of being one for the books, so I'll have my camera ready and waiting to document all that these next few days may hold!

A little 30 Day Challenge update...it's going well so far--I can tell a difference in the way my clothes fit and the amount of energy I have. Haven't weighed yet, but hoping for a few pounds difference once I do! I actually took some "before" pictures last week, so we'll see if I find the guts to post those one day soon!

I'll admit, I had a down moment the other day and almost just threw my hands up in the air...dieting and working out gets so frustrating sometimes. It feels like such a task some days, rather than just being the lifestyle I've gotten used to. But then I open my computer and see before and after pictures like these that remind me of how far I've come and how much I've accomplished, and I know that I can't give up now. I'm so much stronger than my frustrations! Don't ever forget how important encouragement is to the others around you--that little nudge and extra umph may be the thing your friend or family needs to push through the struggles!

Have any of you ever done Pure Barre? Or BarreAmped? BarreAmped is the version that we just got here in Oxford, and I've only been twice but am loving it so far...such a crazy good workout. The next morning I was sore in places I didn't know existed...muscles I had never felt before. So needless to say, I am gonna keep going, if my schedule permits! It's a little pricey, but I'm thankful for a little jumpstart in my usual workout routine. Can't wait to post more about the working out/dieting in my day 15 post!

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed on grad school...not so patiently waiting either my acceptance letter or rejection letter, but either way, I know that it's all in God's hands--as hard as it is to hand over sometimes, I know His timing is perfect. Send up a prayer or two if you think about it...my nerves need as many prayers as they can get!

I'll be reporting back on Monday (maybe Tuesday...) with some stories from the weekend to come. Stick around, because there's bound to be some entertainment! Just a few more hours of work, and then I'm off for two days! And you better believe I'll be cherishing every minute of those two short days!

Happy Friday, my sweet ladies (and the few guys that may find their way around here...) I hope your weekends are full of rest and relaxation...can't wait to read all about them!

Friday's happy thought...

some family love

Happy Monday, chicks! I can't believe it's the start of another week already...April is steadily flying by! It's going to be Christmas before we know it.

My usual Monday morning post consists of a recap of the weekend--usually pictures of baseball, us at the Library, and such. And yeah, that's what this past weekend consisted of, but I won't bore you with a Groundhog day post like every other Monday. This weekend was a little different...I got to enjoy some Rebel baseball with my family! Mixing it up for ya!

Let me get all cheesy for a second and talk about how wonderful my family is--I don't think I talk about them enough on here. They are such a big part of my life, and I am so thankful for getting to spend a day or two with them, enjoying each other and enjoying watching our Rebs play! I can honestly say that I genuinely enjoy every minute I get to spend with my family. I'm so thankful that I don't dread going home and that we all get along so well--and that we actually have a good time when all of us are together--such a huge blessing.

My parents and brother came up on Saturday for the Grove Bowl (Red/Blue Spring football game) and to watch our baseball game against Arkansas--we didn't get the sweep like I was hoping for, but we did win the series, so I'll take it. I had to work that night, so I rallied and spent the whole day with my family, but it was so worth it! Daddy and T came back yesterday to watch the final game in the series, which we lost, but I was so happy to get to spend a little more time with all of my favorite guys!

Thankful for a Dad who taught me and is still teaching me what being a good man and good father means...I'm so blessed to have a Dad who would go to the end of the world to protect me and take care of me! He is my rock!

My mother, my twin. I don't think we ever really stop talking...we've always got a text conversation going, all day every day. She's more of my best friend than my mother, which I'm thankful for at this stage in my life.

The family after our big win on Saturday! Little brother is such a stud, isn't he? Katie (sister) was in Little Rock for a concert, so we missed her!

My happy place, surrounded by my family and my man! Perfect Sunday afternoon.

Daddy with all the kids on Sunday!

Ole Miss has been a huge part of our family and our upbringing--we spent many a weekend in the Grove when we were little...between visiting friends and family, football games and baseball games, and of course the college years for us two girls, Oxford has always been a second home for the Dillard kids. I love getting to continue that tradition as we get older...especially now that Katie and I are both in Oxford for a few more years (at least!) I can't wait to get to continue the tradition with my kids and family one day :)
I'm feeling blessed and full this morning. Weekends always tend to do that to me--especially weekends when my family is involved! I'm trying to make myself get up and do a little Spring cleaning on my Monday off...I'm working the next 3 nights, and then Friday is my sweet boyfriend's birthday so we'll have lots of guests in town to help us celebrate!

Hope your weeks are off to a fabulous start!

friday's letters

Sweet Friday, welcome. I welcome you with open arms this morning...it's so nice to see you, finally! And good morning to each of you pretty ladies!

A little Friday letters to celebrate the TGIF mood I'm currently in...

Photobucket

Dear Humidity,
Must we always have such a hate/hate relationship? I let my hair get super long for a reason...and now you've shown up with a vengeance and have made my straightener's job null and void. Thanks for the sweet 'fro you give me. Let's compromise...you can take half the week, and the other half, I'll have pretty, straight locks. Got it?
Frizzy but still fabulous,
AfroGirl

Dear Rebel Baseball,
Don't break this fan's heart this weekend. Think we can pull out a few wins? For me? Puh-lease? This fan is dying for some good baseball. After the past two weekends with only a few W's sprinkled in, I need a good sweep. I'm in the mood for a Hog roast, aren't you? Hotty Toddy, y'all!
Getting the broom ready,
#rebelfanatic

Dear BarreAmped,
I'm joining your class for the first time today and I'm super nervous, but really excited for a new workout. My sister promises that you deliver...let's hope I agree. And let's also hope I can be a little graceful and not be the klutz of the class! After Jillian killed me on Wednesday, I may not be able to move tomorrow. But that's okay. All in the name of fitness! #skinny
Looking forward to today,
Skinny girl wannabe

Dear Mr Grad School Interviewer Man,
Thanks for not making my phone interview miserable...and thanks for approving me for the final step of the application process. One more check mark to get through, and then I'm on my way to getting my Masters in nursing...nurse practitioner, here I come! Mr. Man, please keep me in mind during the last step...I so desperately want to get accepted!
Fingers crossed,
Future (hopefully) FNP

Dear Sonic,
Must you make your breakfasts look so appealing? I had to control my hands to prevent from turning into your driveway this morning. Mmmm, tater tots. MyFitnessPal wouldn't quite like that to show up in there today...so instead I will go for an egg white omelet and fruit. Just doesn't quite have the same appeal as a fried potatoes and bacon, though, does it? My ass will thank me later, hopefully.
Wishing Sonic was calorie-free,
Hungry, hungry Hippo

Dear Budget,
I don't like you. I don't like you one bit. I dislike saving money. I know you're going to benefit me in the long run, but geez, if Tory Burch sends me ONE more email, I may just break down. Must keep saving. Must keep saving. Must not buy designer shoes. I love you, budget, but I hate you more.
Failing at being Frugal,
A Confessed Shopaholic

Dear Gavin DeGraw,
Thanks for blessing our little town with your presence tonight...I'm so looking forward to enjoying your sexy voice while in my favorite spot (The Grove) with my favorite people. It's bound to be a wonderful night...as long as you sing all of my favorite songs. I'll meet you with a set list at the Union beforehand. Thanks for your cooperation, it is greatly appreciated :)
You better play "Belief",
A loyal (and a little obsessed) fan

Dear Mr. Walker,
I am so thankful for you. How did I get so lucky to snag you as a boyfriend? You are the best part of my every day. I love the moments we have together, and I'm thankful for every moment we have. You only have a few more weeks til graduation, then grad school is DONE! Mr. MBA--so PROUD! You're the best guy I know. Thank you for loving me.
Your girl always,
Rach

Happy Friday, loves.
Hope your weekends are filled with happiness and joy :)

{Oh, How Pinteresting Wednesday}

I can't get enough of Pinterest. Really. I say it every week, and then the next week, I become more addicted. It's the perfect solution to any type of boredom...the amount of time I spend perusing outfits I want, recipes to try, DIY to make, and such is a bit ridiculous, but I love it regardless. Don't you?!

So, today is pretty much my favorite day...{Oh, How Pinteresting Wednesday!}

Michelle is the sweetest ever for hosting us in this link-up! What would we do without Pinteresting Wednesday?

I'm feeling very wedding-y today {yep--that's a word.} My friends are getting engaged left and right, so wedding talk is what's happening around here. So how about I share a little peek into my dream wedding? No, there's no ring on my left hand...and no, there won't be any time soon...so friends and family, stop freaking out. I'm just a girl who's dreamed about her wedding forever, and I pretty much adore my 'Going to the Chapel' board, so why not have a little fun this morning and share?

A girl can dream, right? Just a little glimpse into how I picture the best day of my life...

A gorgeous, lacy white dress...

{my 30 day challenge}

I'm the queen of excuses. You need a way out of something? I'm your girl. Well, at least when it comes to dieting and exercise. I can justify and make up stories with the best of them.

Source: leftonamelia.com via Rachel on Pinterest

If it's important to me, I'll find a way. It's about time I made a commitment to myself and actually wholeheartedly followed through on it. Sure, I'm real good at doing it about 87% all the way through, but why not just give it my all? Especially when it comes to something that's so rewarding to me.

Well, that's where my little 30 day challenge is going to come in. I've been debating on doing this since February, but I always just push it off...not anymore. Here we go! 30 days of giving it 150% on every work out and even in my diet, just to see what I'm capable of. I know how to lose weight, and I know what diet and exercise can do for my body, if I'll just stick with it.

I get so fed up with dieting and going to the gym every day...it feels like the same day, over and over again. Groundhog Day. Do y'all ever feel that way? Like I eat the same meals daily just because I know the calorie count and because it's easy? It gets old. And frustrating. So it's time to kick it up a notch.

The perfect motivation came in the mail a few days ago...the bikini. Oh Victoria's Secret...I love you and hate you, all at the same time. That damn bikini. That I'm determined to wear when we go to the beach at the end of May. Determined. Maybe I'll just hang it up in my room so it'll be that constant reminder of what I'm striving towards.

So what's my plan? What's the strategy?

Well, first off, I'm going to use MyFitnessPal every.single.day for 30 days in a row. I'm notorious for logging in and documenting my calories, but when I decide to eat an extra brownie, I just won't "publish" it for the day...but not this time. Every day, I'm going to log every single thing I eat. And yeah, there will be some days when I totally blow my calorie budget, because I know there will be weekends when I'll be out of town or days when we're celebrating upcoming birthdays or trips with friends. Those days, I'll just work out a little harder, or even just cut myself some slack on the diet train. But every day will have calories documented. You gotta know what's going in to get results.

Second, I WILL work out every day. For 30 days straight. No rest days, no "I'll just work out a little extra tomorrow"...no excuses. And don't worry, some days will be a little less strenuous to give my body a break, but I'm not going to not get any work out in. My goal is to do the 30 Day Shred at least 5 days a week (or even Jillian's Trouble Zones workout), and some days add in some cardio (either treadmill or elliptical), even if it's only for 20 or 30 minutes. Every minute counts!

I'm also about to go cold turkey on the Diet Cokes again...I haven't gone back to drinking them 3 or 4 times a day like I used to, but I have let myself have 3 or 4 a week. And I really can tell a difference when they're in my diet. Only water for me, with the occasional unsweet tea or coffee for a little caffeine at work.

No fast food. None at all. I don't eat fast food often, but I'm going to try my darnedest not to eat out more than once or twice a week. Which means a little less Newk's in my life...but I know it's better for me in the long run. I'm also going to cut back on the Lean Cuisines...too much sodium for me. Sodium=bloat, and that's one thing a girl doesn't need. More fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meats, and lots of new recipes!

Source: loseweight-safe.com via Rachel on Pinterest

I'm going to document my measurements before, on day 15, and on day 30, just to see if I've made any drastic changes. And maybe if you're lucky, I'll even post a before/after picture. That'll be interesting...

I know I'm capable of making big changes in my body. I know without a doubt because I've proven that to myself before already (hello 82 lbs...) so I don't get why I continually just give myself half the effort. I know what it takes and I know that it's possible. So let's see what differences 30 days can make! If you're up for the challenge, do it with me. Cut something out, promise to work out for 30 days straight, promise to eat more vegetables/fruits, whatever you choose--just make a promise to better yourself and stick with it. I'm interested to see what y'all would promise to do. And from experience, dieting and working out are much easier when you have a support team behind you, encouraging you and pushing you to be a better version of yourself! We can do this!

So here goes nothing...my 30 days starts this morning. I'm ready to prove to myself that I CAN do this, and that my goals ARE attainable! Results will come if I stay focused and dedicated on the goal...let's do this, girls!

a New Orleans weekend

Two of my very best girlfriends from college moved to New Orleans after graduation, and up until this past weekend, I had yet to go visit them...shame on me, I know! I finally found a weekend that fit into my work schedule and booked a room in the Alex and Alyssa hotel. It was like a mini vacation--a full weekend of girl time, amazing food, lots of catching up, even more laughs...good for the soul.

Alex and Alyssa are definitely two of my loudest and most entertaining friends, and it's safe to say they're personalities are over the top and fabulous--I love every minute of being around them. They're the kind of people who soak up every moment of the day and make the best of every situation, so of course, this weekend was no exception. You can't help but be happy when you're around these two!

I got into town Friday night (after only getting lost in NOLA once!) and we immediately started getting ready for the night out! We rode the streetcar to Superior Grill...a New Orleans must-eat. I could've hung out there allll night--such a fun place! Their margaritas and daiquiris are to.die.for. I'm pretty sure the conversation never stopped over this dinner...way too many stories to tell and laughs to be had!

After dinner, we went to Pat O's on Bourbon...I haven't been to Bourbon in over a year, but it hasn't changed in the least bit. You could give me a lawn chair and I could just sit on the street corner and people watch all night and still be perfectly content--absolutely entertaining! The piano bar was so much fun...we stayed out a little too late but enjoyed every bit of it.

Saturday morning came bright and early, so we slept in a bit and got up just in time to get ready and head to the French Quarter for French Quarter Fest that was going on this past weekend. Thousands of people everywhere, booths full of amazing New Orleans food, lots of cool shops, and plenty of beverages makes for my kind of afternoon! I had the most amazing barbecue shrimp po-boy from Bourbon House...I think I may have had a dream about it last night--it was THAT good. After festing it up a little, we headed to the Shops at Canal Place for a little bit of retail therapy...huge Saks, Anthropologie, JCrew, Francesca's...fabulous!

We headed home for a nap and showers before dinner. Y'all...I died and went to pasta heaven at dinner. We had the best meal at Vincent's...I highly recommend it to anyone visiting New Orleans. Amaaaazing Italian food and an incredible atmosphere...so cozy and inviting! I'll be taking Andrew back there one day, for sure! We met up with some of their friends that night at Maison on Frenchmen St...it reminded me a lot of a bar we have here in Oxford, so of course, I loved every minute of it. Fantastic music AND they have Abita Strawberry everywhere you turn, so I was a happy, happpppy girl.

Sunday morning came too soon and I had to pack up to head back North...but first, we enjoyed brunch with Alyssa's mom at Surrey's. I could've just lived there--the food was absolutely delicious! I had Bananas Foster French toast...dang, I'm telling you--best breakfast I've had in a long, long time. Add in a mimosa and great company and you can't beat that.

I said my goodbyes and headed home...but got to stop about an hour into the trip and visit with my sweet Mary Kathryn. She and her hubby live in Baton Rouge, so it was the perfect ending to a wonderful trip...it was so good to see her and get to spend some time catching up with her face to face and not over the phone. Such a sweet little blessing!

This post sounds like a bunch of rainbows and glitter and happy thoughts, but really, y'all...life is good. I can't complain about a thing, and I'm so blessed to be able to say that. I needed this weekend...it was a welcomed break away from Oxford and the usual life. I was reminded of how amazing my friends are and how lucky I am to have them in my life. Okay, okay...enough cheesiness. I just can't help it--when my heart is this full, I just want to share it!

Time for a few pictures, right?

Whew, long weekend recap, but I wanted to document all of the good times had! Monday is here and the weather is rainy and gross--mourning the end of a great weekend, maybe. I'm headed back to bed soon to sleep for work tonight, so I hope you ladies have a lovely start to your week! Make this Monday beautiful, girls :)

thursday blurbs

Oh, hey Thursday.
It's already Thursday? I had every intention of having a thought-provoking, meaningful post written for today, but the words just didn't come for me. Maybe another day, I'll let that one sit for a while. So instead, I'll give you a little of what I'm best at...blurbs. Randoms. Short little thoughts and ideas and goings on that are floating around this head of mine.

{one} I made this recipe the other afternoon...I skipped lunch and was hungry but couldn't decide what I was hungry for, so I popped these little pizza bites in the oven for me and Andrew. I ended up halving the actual recipe to make it more snack-appropriate. They were pretty delicious...I'd change a few things for the next time I make them but overall, they were super easy!

{two} I mentioned this on Twitter the other day--now I want to see what y'all have to say about this. One fashion trend that I just don't get? Cowboy boots with dresses. Totally a faux pas to me. Shame on me, I know...I'm from the South and don't like the combination. Blasphemy, right? GASP--I don't even own cowboy boots. I just can't do it. Some girls look presh pulling it off, but I just can't even make myself try. I don't know what it is about it...but you'll never catch me in that get up. Does that make me a bad Southern woman? Am I the only one out there? What trends do you just not get?

{three} Have y'all ever listened to James Morrison? Looooove his voice. And love all of his lyrics...this popped up randomly in my shuffle the other day and made me quite happy! Don't be surprised if you see me use this in a wedding/engagement video sometime in the future...makes me think of my guy, which makes me smile!

{four} I'm off this next weekend (can I get an amen!?) so I'm heading to New Orleans to spend a little time with these two girls (aren't they hot!?)...super pumped about a girls weekend away from home! I need a little vacay and time away, especially when it involves seeing Alex and Alyssa! I'm looking forward to lots of shopping (hello, birthday money!), some good food, lots of laughs with those two precious girls, maybe a fruity drink or two...it's gonna be good for the soul, without a doubt! I'm sure there will be good stories to tell on Monday!

{five} I went home on Monday to see my fam for a little belated Easter trip...it was so good to be home and not have a care in the world. I sure love my family a lot. My parents always make sure I'm completely relaxed and actually get a little rest...thank the Lord for that! I even got to see most of my grandparents and spend a little time with them. I'm thankful for those little moments. Oh, and I got my Easter basket...want to know what's in a grown up's basket? Lots of chocolate, some new tweezers (unibrow is gone now!), make-up remover cloths, and Victoria's Secret panties. #thanksmom

{six} A certain special gentleman in my life is turning the big 2-4 in a few weeks and I have no idea of what to get him! Why are guys so hard to buy for?! And what's even worse is our anniversary is 4 days after his birthday. Help a sister out--what gift ideas would your man, brother, etc like? Any suggestions? Btw--have I mentioned lately how much I love him? :)

{seven} Thanks to the cute and sweet Emma over at Emma Lately, this beauty is headed my direction and I couldn't be more excited...it's a little sad how excited I get over jewelry. What can I say--my heart skips a beat for a statement necklace!

{eight} I'm thinking about doing a vlog soon...maybe a Rachel Tells All/Ask Me Anything type thing. Any questions you're just dying to ask me? Anything you want to know? I know I've gained quite a few new readers over the past month, so maybe this could be a good way for you to get to know me better! I'm super awkward when talking about myself, but I'd love to see what y'all come up with...and I'll answer anything :)

Well...how's that for a random post. Around the world in 8 thoughts. It's getting pretty close to bedtime for me, if you can't tell already. One more night of work then NOLA woo!

Happy almostfriday Thursday to you, my lovelies!
