Happy Saturday, ladies! I'm having the best trip...nothing but relaxing by the ocean and eating my weight in seafood...perfection, if you ask me!
Today, we've got Miss Nicole guest posting about a topic near and dear to her heart...something we all need to hear, especially since summer has arrived and the sun is out in full force! Listen up and take her advice :)
Hey, {simple.little.joys} readers! I’m Nicole and you can find me blogging about my faith, my love, and random life happenings over at Bloom!
I’m so excited to be filling in for Rach today while she enjoys the sun and sand on her beach vacation! She gave me no limits when it came to what I was going to say in this little post, but it didn’t take me too long to nail down a topic since this particular subject has been hitting close to home for me in the past few weeks.
Skin cancer.
My teenage sister went in for a dermatologist appointment several weeks ago to get checked out and the doctor found a rather large mole that she hadn’t told anyone in the family about. The doctor immediately was concerned and opted to not even do a biopsy and schedule a quick surgery later that week to have it removed. Several days later A went in with a mole too big to keep and came out with a few stitches. Her appointment with the pathologist was set for the next week.
3 days later, I decided I needed to go ahead and get checked out because there was a mole that had been concerning me for quite a few months. I went in, the doctor took a look, and she took a biopsy because she was a little concerned, too.
A’s pathologist appointment confirmed that she was melanoma free this time, but that she was at high risk of developing it in the future.
I got a letter a few days later saying that the biopsy showed I had a “harmless mole”.
While we’re both fine now, it brought me to the realization that I had to take better care of my skin. RIGHT NOW.
Since then, I’ve tried to stay out of the sun as much as possible. I sit on the back patio in the shade where I can still enjoy sitting outside while being out of direct sunlight. And when I am in direct sunlight, you better believe this girl is spraying on high SPF every few minutes!
Being safe in the sun really isn’t that difficult, you just have to put in the effort to do it! Here are a few products that will help you make smarter decisions when it comes to the sun…
{1} One of the best ways to protect your stomach from the sun is to cover it… Yeah, yeah not many people like to wear a one piece, but I think if I had a trendy, floral one like this one from Lulu’s this season I might just wear it!
{2} A floppy hat is a great way to protect your face from the sun! And they are SO fun, I think. This one from Forever 21 is a whopping $13. For that price, you could send it to your favorite shop to be monogrammed. CUTE.
{3} I HATE having chapped or dry lips, so I am sure to put tons of SPF lip balm, like THIS Nivea balm, on before going in the sun.
{4} I haven’t been in the sun without spraying myself like crazy with THIS Neutrogena sunscreen mist! I love that it is quick and easy and I don’t have to get my hands dirty!
{5} This is one of my FAVORITE products in the Summer. I don’t like to put on full makeup before a day by the pool, but I like to have a little something on my face. THIS tinted moisturizer from Mary Kay gives the perfect amount of coverage while still protecting against the sun.
Alright, girls! It took a little scare to make me serious about taking care of my skin in the sun, but don’t let that be you!
Take action now to protect yourself and your skin will thank you later. ;)
Thanks for having me, Rachel and sweet {simple.little.joys} gals!
I don't know about you, but I definitely needed these little reminders! I'll be spraying on a little extra SPF from now on!
Happy Saturday, lovelies!
